HEY, NEW JERSEY!

HELP TAMERLAINE BAN THE CRATES!

A male cow is taken from his mother within hours of birth to live his short life in an isolated crate. Between the too-small crate, chains that restrict movement, and the iron-deficient formula he is given, he’ll be weak, anemic, and always thirsty. People want their “veal” pale and soft.

Female pigs on factory farms—99% in the USA—live most of their lives in crates too small for them to even turn around. They will spend about five years here, even while pregnant, before their bodies give out.

GREAT NEWS! Assemblyman Raj Mukherji and Senator Vin Gopal are not giving up on getting cruel crates banned in our state. They are the Prime Sponsors for bills A.1970/S.1298, which would ban gestation crates for pigs and veal crates for calves. Both are mentally and physically torturous, and completely barbaric. Join us in helping them!

Here’s what we’re fighting to end.

What are veal crates?

What are gestation crates?

In the United States, 99% of female pigs spend their entire lives immobilized in tiny cages called gestation crates. Each sow is trapped, even while pregnant, in a cage too small to even turn her heads. For 10 days, she will be allowed to nurse babies through iron bars in a slightly larger cage. Then? Impregnated again, and put back in the gestation crate. Over and over for yers until her body gives out and she is sent to slaughter.

We’re simply fighting for enough space for pigs to turn around, stand up, lie down, and extend their limbs fully.

Being born male in the dairy industry is being born into hell. Within hours of birth, calves are removed from their mothers—usually in a wheelbarrow—and locked in a veal crate for life. These cages are barely two feet wide, even though a male calf weights over 300 lbs. by slaughter age, which is less three months. They will be fed formula that includes ingredients like cow fat and fish, which they can’t process. It leaves them sick and anemic. The result? Pale veal, which sells for more money.

We’re asking that lawmakers do the bare minimum, here. Step up and legislate that these babies can stand up, lie down, and extend their limbs.

  • Ten state have banned gestation crates.

  • Nine states have banned veal crates.

  • In the EU, veal crates have been outlawed for years, and gestation crates are on their way out: Parliament has called for a ban on ALL cages and crates by 2027.

What happens if we DON’T ban these crates?

Expectant mother pigs and baby calves would continue to suffer in our state, and others that our decision may influence. But if their lifelong imprisonment and suffering isn’t enough reason, there are ways this decision could affect US. The growing number of bans on these torture devices means there are fewer places where factory farms can run their cruel businesses without consequences. Where will the factory farms go? They will look to set up environmentally disastrous, smelly, illness-inducing farms in states where they can still use their necessary tools. And just for reference? The land needed by Tyson to feed its factory farmed animals last year was twice the size our state.

So…let’s make New Jersey as unappealing as possible!

WE NEED ADVOCATES!

We can make this happen and spare these innocents from a life of undue punishment. Please join us at #TeamTamerlaine to speak up for those who can’t.

Here’s what you can do.

1. Spread the word. Post and share what you know on all your social media.

Get the word out that pigs and cows in our state suffer, and that WE have the power to end that suffering. You can use the pictures above, just click to download or copy. Articles listed below can help validate any arguments you may encounter with salient points for reference.

3. Call your legislator TODAY.

Find your state legislator here, along with their office address, email address, and phone number. Call the office and voice your opinion as a voting constituent. Short of visiting the office, phone calls are the best way of assuring your voice is heard. Ask them to vote in favor of bills A.1970/S.1298!

4. Write a letter.

If you can’t call or visit, send your legislator a letter. Click on the picture to download one you can use as a template. All the information your elected official needs is in there, but don’t be afraid to change it up and make it your own! (Personal letters are more likely to get a good response than a form letter.) Then, mail or email your letter to your legislators directly.

5. Please take a moment to email our Primary Sponsors reminding them of your support, and thanking them for pushing for an end to these inhumane devices.
